one thing to think about maybe is focus. first thing that hits me looking at this is that all the glowy bits are similar in strength and look blended.. I'd suggest to pick a spot.. and make that part bright and shine like mad or so.

I know what you mean, problem is with lightning where in this case it almost wraps around her coming close to being the same distance as the character, the area of the light will be far different from picking one or two light sources. Lightning you have to view the whole length of it has a light source.

I did a lot of referencing and this seems to be the main way to do it. It will make a lot more sense when I finish the background and re-due the lightning. The background will have a floating city in the clouds to increase the mood and add more reflected light. Also I will be darkening the background contrast which seems to sharpen the character contrast. After removing the lightning and some of the cloud effect to work on the background I have found about 1/3 of that soft blended glow goes away, plus since this was meant to be viewed at 1000+ pixels wide the closer view has better contrast compared the the 800 pixel version that the kitchen shrinks to, right click and go to the image location and you should see what I mean.
