Gomi Yow Studies

Postby lestikitty » 11 Apr 2011, 23:26

Hi pplz. I've been hanging around the forums long enough and figured it was about time to introduce myself.

My name is Sharmaine, I'm african american/female/26. I float around the net under many aliases but my main one is Lestikitty. I've been drawing since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out in 1992. My initial insperation to draw came from this game and my older brother who loved to draw. What drives me to continue and improve in art is my desire to come as close as I can to make all of my heart's desires come to life through it. My goal with my art is to merge cartoon and anime styles with all the principles and techniques used in realism to make something new and unique, but I still have a long ways to go before im even halfway there I'd say, lol. For the most part I'm a self taught artist, save for the few art classes from highschool and drawing 2, intro to painting, design 1, and graphic design, which I took at a 2 year college. I still love to draw lots of Sonic inspired art and art from various games and anime that I like as well as some of my own characters and friend's characters, but I know that I need to work on doing still lifes and figure drawing and protraits and junk so I hope to get some motivation to work on that here at the kitchen.

I decided to make a special topic here so that I can log my work and don't have to nag anybody in the chat to give me critique XD

Thanks in advance to everybody for your help and encouragement <:3c

Color Study // "Stupid Boy" Pt.1

Postby lestikitty » 12 Apr 2011, 00:48

So for the last few days I've been working on that 500 figures challenge and, well, yesterday I couldn't take much more of that so I sat down and worked on this instead. I was going thru old doodles and found this .psd file that I had titled "stupid boy". Y'see, I hung around a chat in iscribble and there was this guy in the chat that I liked who REJECTED me and there were times where I'd go in the chat and find junk he drew like THIS:
Image
cute, yes...but still not something I wanted to see at that point in time, lol. But despite being bitter I screen capped and saved those doodles on layers in this file along with some sketches they inspired me to draw.
Image
So I'm reminiscing over our crappy mouse drawn doodles and I look at this one and say to myself "this is too cute to be so crappy. I can clean it up real quick since I have a tablet now and slap some flats on there to give it some mood." But I had a hard time finding the right palette...
Image
Colors have always been a real weakpoint in my art. I can't pick them to save my life.

I was going for a high key overall light red feel for the picture so I tried giving the colors red tints but obviously that wasnt working. And I asked for help but none of the suggestions I tried would give me the results I wanted so I just had to sit and keep fiddling with the colors till I got what I wanted. I figured I needed to start from a neutral palette and work from there.
Image
So I finally manage to get a palete that i liked and then decide to test out an idea I had earlier and slap on some cheap gradients real fast. The result was pleasing to me.
Image
The backlight wasn't originally part of my vision but a paintover that spidey did gave me the idea for it, but it wasn't taken very well when I showed my update in the chat so I dropped the idea and proceeded to refine from there.
Image
It seemed that pretty much after I figured out what palette I wanted, everything just got so much easier. Adding all the details hasn't been so much of a pain. The real challenge has been trying to maintain the color balance while adding them so the picture stays high key and with a light red tint.

The above stage was a bit darker than I wanted so I slapped some shading on before I went to bed last night to try and brighten it up.
Image

Feel free to critique <:3c . After this challenge I'll try to finish this up.

Believe it or not, the point to art, any art--music, illustration, literature, sculpture, movies--is to convey an emotion, thought, idea, or all of the above. So the message of any piece of art is its foundation not just some "mere detail".

I've been distracted lately so I haven't been working on my art like I should. But I have a few interesting things.

I had a dream I was painting this picture of a fish so I gave it a try. I couldn't accurately duplicate the image in my vision tho. Too busy fussing about the colors.
Image
I think its a sign that I should paint other things.

And I just got back from a three day trip, like, yesterday. I took my sketchbook and pastels with me hoping to do some drawing but I only got to do one thing, which was done during the car ride, cuz I was constantly being harrassed by gremlin--imean kids
Image
It sucks, I know. I barely ever use my pastels. I think I should more.

And upon saying that I think I may go outside and draw some stuff with them tomorrow. The weather is warm enough for that now.

Some pastel sketches. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to pastels
Image
Image
I like this one best cuz the colors came out so nice and clear. But I didn't try to do any of that fancy smanshy blending.
Image

And an accidental face practice.

Thank you guys. No, no ref for the fish pic, Meteor, and I had such a hard time with that face practice that I feel like I should do some face studies before I attempt another practice.

I can't believe I got a comment on the sonic drawing, lol. If I had thought anybody would like them I'd 've posted more cuz I have tons of those doodles. My all time fave doodle of sonic is the one I did of him picking his nose lol. I like to draw things that make me laugh, he's perfect for it.
