A question of pricing!

Postby Nakadai Shimada » 13 Jun 2011, 12:05

Hey, hey Kitchenites, been a while I know, been real busy lately lol.

Anyway, as the title says, I've got a bit of a pricing query; I've been asked by an up and coming local band (who have reached the final of national a live and unsigned competition and have a place in a huge arena gig next month, which if the win gives them a pretty big signing(just to demonstrate how up and coming they are)) to produce some album cover art for them and a selection of prints. This is all good and well, but I don't really know how to price myself in something like this.
Do I ask for a set price, if so how do I price myself, or do I ask for a cut of the poster/shirt etc sales... Or both? :o

Any help would be really appreciated guys! :44:

If you want a % of the posters and shirt sells, you will need a contract of course, and you will pretty much be getting in bed with them for how ever long. and you risk them not selling anything thus doing the work for free.
Personally I would set a price, do the work, and move on...If they like it they will come back to you again for future projects.
present yourself as a professional, don't under quote your work and give them a good experience.

:)
forgot to mention
get a contract either way. that way both parties know what to expect from eachother

That makes a lot of sense mugs, cheers very much for that... Still don't really know how much to price myself at either (that's not a good start lol)

Did someone record your conversation on the chat yesterday? It may be interesting to put it here...

That's a really good point, and question actually, there were a LOT of very good points made, and it would be helpful to anyone whos unsure of how to price themselves/first timers etc... We'll have to ask the Pui, he's most likely to have done so. Aside from that, we did rattle up a couple of interesting links:...
For the most part these are in reference to my query, looking at album covers and prints in a similar vein, but the ideas are still widely applicable. Hope you all find this as helpful as I did. Pui was also V. helpful in throwing these kind of ideas around, as was everyone else on chat last night. Cheer very much, very appreciated!

A link to a book that you can have a brief browse through online
A forum which throws up some excellent answers
MetaFilter, also throws up some excellent points.

All definitely worth a bit of a read through if your an amateur artist looking for some pricing assitance!
