Creature Lab #03: Bloodsucking Plant

Your job is to depict the Bloodsucking Plant, and the finished product MUST follow the physical guidelines mentioned below, but other than that it is completely free to your imagination! Due to the overwhelming number of plants and trees, flowers and grasses found in the world, this topic is pretty wide open. It just has to look mean and green (and any other colors you'd like of course) At the end of the week, a poll will be created and the victor will be chosen, and their monster added to the almighty Beastiarium.

Name: Bloodsucking Plant
Location: Multiple (Mostly fertile forests and jungles)
Description: Any adventurer knows that trekking through the jungle can be perilous, full of vicious beasts and unseen dangers. Running into carnivorous creatures is almost to be expected, but what most travelers don't think about is all the dangerous plant life. One of the deadliest is the Bloodsucking Plant, also known as the Vampire Plant. Laying hidden amongst the flora of the jungle, the plant waits for it's victim to get close, then latches its tendrils onto it, injecting a toxin that induces sleep. It then begins to drain the blood of their prey, until it is satiated. Aside from this ambush approach, larger Vampire Plants have been known to attack their victims head on, using their thorned tendrils and teeth-like maws as weapons.

Physical Traits:
    • Use any type of plant/flower as references, a good idea would be to look at the various types of carnivorous plants
    • The Vampire Plant sucks the blood from it's victims, so some type of organic apparatus must be included somewhere
    • Freedom to choose color(s) and pattern, but remember that it is a plant that has to somewhat blend in with its environment
    • Size limitations: Various sizes of Vampire Plants have been noted, some as small as a rabbit, others as large as a horse, so there's not much of a size limit.
    .

First off I apologize for the delay, this should have been up yesterday but something came up and I was unable to make this thread. But there were alot of great entries this round, very different takes and interesting creatures. I didn't have time to finish mine unfortunately. Anyways, it's about that time! LET'S VOTE!

Time to give some critics:

@v2: your creature is very cool, while being simple in terms of design. It somehow reminds me of some pokemons. What I regret about it is that it looks more like an animal than an actual plant. Maybe with some more leaves and tendrils it could be more on the plant side. Still very cool concept, I hope you'll bring more of these.

@Nyra: I really like the design, it looks like an hybrid between an orchid and a carnivorous plant. As you're supposed to focus on the concept, I won't take into account that I think the lighting of this piece could have been a bit brighter to avoid some dull colors in some areas. However, I think you could emphasize the roots a bit more if your intention was to give it a way to move by itself. Great job anyway.

@Viall: while classical, the concept still works. I really like the dynamism of the piece, but I regret it is not as detailed and refined as the other pieces here. I'm sure you could spend a little more time on it, rework a bit the lighting and colors, and you'll have a very strong piece. Keep it up.

@Dm: awesome colors and lighting and cool while simple design, my favourite piece. I don't have anything in particular to say, except that I would have loved to see this in a higher rez with some more details and texture (maybe you did it, but at this resolution I can't tell).

Without surprise, my vote goes to Dm.
Keep it up guys, you do a great job.

Thanks Meteorskies :) Eh. sorry to break the news, but the texture you see now is pretty much you'll see at high resolution. I kinda ended it prematurely cuz I suck with texture and well, let's say with a lot of color/value play around, I just didn't want to ruin it any further. :P It is definitely my weakness I know. I'll work on it though with some more studies, detailed may I add!

I can upload a higher resolution somewhere later, but don't get your hope too high. :P

Very awsome pieces everyone. I congrats already Dm7, a very poetic drawing, good technique. As for me, I probably chose the wrong one ,despite its a competition, and of course my design isnt too original or blood sucking. Sorry about others, I cant comment you, its too much of frustration writing with an iPad and auto lithuanian correct :05:

I'm totaly lost :/

crit/comment time :)

V2: I really love the idea of that unfortunately I have to agree, it looks more like an animal than a plant. It's a close call though and CUTE! :3 Nice job
Nyra: I love the concept of your flowers, probably more realistic and detailed than mine lol that's what I like about it, especially the "teeth" the flower got. Yummy nom nom :D Btw I didnt mean to make my flower pink like yours. Pure coincidence. :X
Viall: Already said my opinion in the post above. ;) Although I would love to see better shading/lighting on it.It's not always white and black. ;)
Me: Well, don't be lazy. Do more texture/detail work! *Slaps herself*

Use them both.
Nyra Male plants higher elevation to spread it's "Seed" down to the lower elevation. or the Rumble bee does the work.
Dm Female plants lower elevation needs less sunlight to grow. takes the seeds and becomes fertile.
