The Creature Lab is a weekly activity that puts your monster creation skills to the test against other artists. Each week there will be a topic and description of a beastie, and it is open to as many artists that want to participate. At the end of each week each artists' rendition will be put up and a poll will be created and everyone will vote for the creature they wanna see forever immortalized in the Inkblade Beastiarium. Good luck to all participants and may the best creature win!
Creature Lab #06: Memurak
(Okay, in a strange twist this week we will be creating a creature that I saw in my dream last night. I'll write what I know and everyone can fill in the blanks)
The Memurak is a large enigmatic cat like creature, with dense but lean muscles covering it's body, which is also built for climbing large trees. It has a large head, almost appearing disproportionate from its body, with very large, human like eyes that have a slight glow to them. This human like quality makes those who look upon it a little unnerved, as if it's staring into their souls. There are strange tentacle/feelers protruding from its face and some parts of its body. The Memurak is also highly intelligent, and although it can be a very deadly creature, its demeanor is more cunning than ferocious. Since most accounts of this creature are foggy at best, and only glimpses of it have been reported, there are some details that are not known. One such detail is whether it has a short fur covering it's body or if it's some kind of scaly or smooth skin. Its coloration is varied between hues of teal, violet, powder blue, aquamarine, and everything in between. The colors also vary throughout a single Memuraks body, and there is much variation on the face and feelers especially. It has a long whiplike tail that it sometimes uses as a weapon when facing multiple enemies. At the end of the week, a poll will be created and the victor will be chosen, and their monster added to the almighty Beastiarium.
Name: Memurak Location: Description: Memuraks roam the jungles and forests near villages, silent guardians of their borders. Some locals call them "shadow cats" due to their stealthy nature and cat-like appearance. A feeling of dread can be felt when these creatures stare at you, with their strange human-like eyes. It is unknown as to why these creatures attack humans, as they have been ruled out as food source from the victims bodies remaining intact. Memuraks are excellent tree climbers, and they can jump from tree to tree, several meters above the forest floor. This mode of transportation allows them to quietly stalk their prey from a distance, unseen. This has lead to the superstition surrounding the Memuraks, as many believe they are supernatural entities guarding the forest.
Physical Traits:
• Use the physical traits outlined in the descriptions above • Use the coloration at will, mixing as much or little as you want, but make sure there is variance on the feelers of the creature. • Remember that it is "cat-like" and not exactly similar to a cat. Use that freely, studying all or any combination of cats to form your own body structure. Also remember your free to design the skin and/or fur as you see fit. • Anything that I didn't touch on will be more freedoms that you can fill in for the creature. Just remember to portray the key points, such as the large disproportionate face and big human-like eyes with a faint glow. • Size limitations: All accounts have the creature varying in sizes between a bobcat and a lion . ACTIVITY START DATE: SUNDAY OCTOBER 2nd, ends OCTOBER 16th, that's right we are trying a 2-week contest to allow those who have much busier schedules to show us what they got! All submissions must be turned into this thread by that date. Also, all WIPs should be posted in this thread! Starting with this activity, all finished entries MUST be in COLOR since it will be part of a full color manual. Also, a note about backgrounds: they are NOT required and I also encourage you to do a simple one or none at all, considering there will not be a background featured in the manual. The focus here is on the creature ONLY. |
