The Creature Lab is a weekly activity that puts your monster creation skills to the test against other artists. Each week there will be a topic and description of a beastie, and it is open to as many artists that want to participate. At the end of each week each artists' rendition will be put up and a poll will be created and everyone will vote for the creature they wanna see forever immortalized in the Inkblade Beastiarium. Good luck to all participants and may the best creature win!

Creature Lab #07: Halloween Theme

To celebrate the most awesome holiday ever, Halloween, for this creature activity you will be able to choose one of four classic monsters to recreate/re-design, putting your own unique spin on the archetype. The four are the Vampire, Werewolf, Witch/Warlock, and Fishman. We've all seen them throughout history and movies, done a million times but now is your chance to put your stamp on these legends!

Name: Vampire
Location: Bloodmoon Castle
Description:Image

Name: Werewolf
Location: Howling Hills

Name: Witch/Warlock
Location: Various

Name: Fishman
Location: Blackwater Bayou

Physical Traits:
    • Use the physical traits outlined in the descriptions above
    • Make sure to state which creature you will be creating
    • You are free to creature your own version of any of these creatures, the only requirement is that it is recognizable, say for a Vampire they should have fangs of some sort and be humanoid, however you could add batlike features to change it from the classic look.
    • Size limitations: Most of these creatures are usually the size of humans, and a bit larger (especially in the case of the Werewolf).
    .

ACTIVITY START DATE: THURSDAY OCTOBER 20th, ends THURSDAY NOVEMBER 2nd, all submissions must be turned into this thread by that date. Also, all WIPs should be posted in this thread! Starting with this activity, all finished entries MUST be in COLOR since it will be part of a full color manual. Also, a note about backgrounds: they are NOT required and I also encourage you to do a simple one or none at all, considering there will not be a background featured in the manual. The focus here is on the creature ONLY.

Do you need the whole creature or is it up to me? May I also just draw the head or down to the shoulders?

Either way you can count me in :20:

Jakey has the final say here, but I would encourage you to go ahead and create a full body view since these creature labs are for building and archiving Game characters for InkBlade :44:

itll be interesting seeing the different spins on these classics. the classic images of these creatures are so deeply bred into me, i have no ideas.

edit: so i read up on these guys and when i began looking at the fishman's info, i realized that i'm really not all that familiar with him. i really liked his story and the description given of him which was nothing like that picture: scales from his throat to his stomach and down the spine of his back, not all over, and he had white skin and hair. plus it even described his demenor: calm and quiet. reading all that got my imagination going and so i gave designing him a shot. i normally don't like designing character appearances but i was honestly curious.

i really liked that far right concept of the male the most, so much so, i used that concept as a base for..a fishwoman?

well this was fun.

Believe it or not, the point to art, any art--music, illustration, literature, sculpture, movies--is to convey an emotion, thought, idea, or all of the above. So the message of any piece of art is its foundation not just some "mere detail".

I'm with Kitty on this. The fishman seems very interesting
... I mean think of all the different kinds of fish that can inspire a new creation.

well im sure its possible to get interesting redesigns for the rest of them too, you need to look for inspiration to help your mind break out of that box (at least i do) and i didnt really get info that could help with that from the other descriptions until the fishman. but there are other places to look, which im generally too lazy to do lol; like say that show SoulEater, there are some pretty nifty witch designs in there. some have taken on animal like characteristics and and they use tools other than brooms and cauldrons. but you could also transfer ideas between the types, like the fishman's info said the fishman wasnt scaly all over so who says that the wolfman has to have fur all over. and i read some interesting stuff about a fiji mermaid where it was a juvenile monkey head sown to the tail of a fish *shudder* so why is it that the wolfman has to be the result of some transformation, why cant he be like some creation: wolf parts sown to a man? but you gotta just put some effort in and look, cuz itll take longer for an idea to smack you in the face.
