What are your short/long term goals? :>

Postby MrReedux » 14 Nov 2010, 06:20

So, I'm procrastinating.
And if you're reading this, you're either done for the day or in the same boat as me :D
What I do when I procrastinate is read articles and books on how to overcome being lazy and procrastination. So I guess at least I'm spending it sort of okay.

This lead me to start writing tomorrows To-do list, today.

This lead me to write down a Goals list, since I've completely lost focus over the dreadful summer.

If you are procrastinating and don't want to procrastinate any more, I invite you to do the above (I feel that writing on paper makes me remember and also helps realize what I write) And if you want, share them in this thread. Or just some of them.
And I'm not talking about general things like "Get a job" or "In 2011 I'll get buff and get a girlfriend and ride unicorns".

Be more specific.

Here's an example of my (incomplete) 'Short Term Goals' list.

- By Friday the 19th of November 2010, draw at least 4hours a day on commission work!
- By Friday the 26th of November 2010, draw at least 6hours a day on commission work!
- By November 30th, draw 8 hours a day spending at least 6hours on commission work!
- By New years day, do 30 push ups, 30 sit ups, 50 squats 2-3 times a day!

(if there are no commissions, replace w/ portfolio work like mini-comps and 'Character of the week')

Ok, that's great. Now I have some short term goals, but that alone won't mean jack-sh*t!
I need to make some sort of to-do list in order to actually carry them out and progress.

So my to-do list for tomorrow is...

- Breakfast, Coffee or tea. (Extremely important D:<)
* NO Skype, e-mail, facebook, twitter, what have you.
- Do 10 figure drawings.
- Check e-mails, Facebook, Twitter, Update Sketchbook, Quick work out. (Push ups etc)
* Still NO Skype!
- Draw a sketch, any sketch, work or personal. 2hours max.
- EAT. COFFEE. (Extremely important D:<)
- Draw on commissions for 4hours.
- Skype, but try to keep working.
Eventually...
- Write new to-do list for tomorrow.

Basically I want to get back to the routine I had a year ago. (Curse you summer!)
So, I have my goals and I will consistently update my to do list daily to realize them.
Remember, baby steps.

Also, read this: http://workawesome.com/productivity/how ... o-do-list/
Can you think up some long/short term goals and what you need to get it done?
Do share.

(prays he's not the only one in need of this!)

I'm also procrastinating. :34:
I've had this problem right after I was released from service. I simply have no drive. And I know daily studies and continuous practice would really be worth it and get me far but I just can't bring myself to do it. So I spend my time playing games. I'm also pretty bad with managing my time so I'll keep things simple.

I'm thinking of starting small. As of tomorrow I should do:
-two figure studies everyday
-two hours a day on a current work in progress
-if I have no WIP's at the time, I will triple the amount of figure studies, or study texture and colour
-if I feel like I have nothing to do, I will read books dealing with art or follow tutorials

It's simple and sounds easy. After I've built enough confidence with this I will move on to drawing CHOW's. At the turn of the year I will raise the stake and push myself.

I hope I understood this right. Let the fighting begin. :x :b3:

I started a 30 day challenge 22 days ago for which I have to do one 30 minute speed painting a day for 30 days. I haven't slacked once. You can see every day's painting on my blog:
http://dz-ero.blogspot.com/search/label ... 0Challenge
It started with me doing mere speedos from reference photos, then I decided to 'study' while I'm at it and for the last couple days I've been doing real life studies. I have come a long way since I started the challenge and improved in numerous areas. I still have 8 days to go but I'm calling it a success already.

When this challenge is over, I will start another one and I'm inviting you to participate in it as well. It's fun!

As for my short term goals, you can see them on my blog:
http://dz-ero.blogspot.com/p/goals.html

My long term goals are...I cannot tell you. It's a secret. :10:

I think you should start with few short term goals and add new ones as the older ones reach completion -- if they are daily exercises, as you get accustomed to them.

Too much at once may totally bum you out. Of course, this isn't true for everyone (probably) but I know it's for me.

interesting topic
I'm usually procrastinating. :D even though I have work to do but well.. I'm lazy. :D

anyway I noticed to get a routine you can't just say "Hey I make for the next week everyday 6hours daily" because your body and mind is already "addicted" and used to something else and you will think in the back of your head "okay if I do that 6hours daily I have 6hours less free time for my other stuff that I like soo much" which makes you think that 6hours daily is more a problem rather than a solution.
although that thought way is totally theoritical.. I work this way, for you it's maybe different.
because of that dz-ero's try is actually much better.

You still say "hey I'm doing that daily" but you just know 30minutes are not much.. you would rather do that than procrastinating and it doesn't take up that much time.
So if you start that you build up a foundation and after a month maybe you already have a habit which will drive you to do that 30minutes atleast daily.. and then comes your motivation because if you have a habit you don't have to force you to do it.. you start with 30minutes and from there you can totally decide if you make the session longer or shorter totally depending on what are you working on.

that usually works for me.. because I'm tooootaly lazy. :D habits are the only way to keep me on something.

I have already decided that two days, every five days (so weekends basically) Will be free time to do whatever, or just nothing at all.
I'm not really addicted to anything, I'm just not working. Just staring at my PC, chatting on skype.
So I really do think this shouldn't be a problem. I just have to stop going on skype and such :|

And I already spend like 4-6hours a day drawing on crap, its just not work crap most of the time :D

Thanks for your inputs :)

And dZ, your studies are getting good man :D way better than when I last saw your work.
Do you do any 2hour studies as well?

Write a to-do list EVERY night for the next day.
If you say two figure studies today. You'll have forgotten or don't care by Wednesday. Keep writing it down for the next day, by hand preferably. It somehow helps me to actually do it, instead of "Oh I have 14things I need to do today but no plan on how to go about it, I'll just do 4 and then skip the rest." Instead, "Do this first, then this, then this."

To-do lists are fluid, you might find that doing B before A would work better, so change it. Or something comes up, they're just there to make it easier for your brain to handle it all and not be overwhelmed. (My reason for Procrastinating)

I call dibs on Pinky!

@Reedux:

Thanks :) I too think that I've improved a lot in the last couple months.
I don't do any studies longer than 30 minutes. I might when I have more time.
Right now 30 minutes are all I'm willing to spare on studies what with all the things I am busy with.

Hey, as long as you're actually busy and not just sitting around it's all good ;)
This is all about breaking bad habits and replacing them with new ones.

Hi...
I have procrastinated posting (yup, have been lurking) this among and many other things that I don't wanna think about.

So I think it's safe to say that I am in the same boat.

Anyways just wanted to let you know that you all have inspired me to just get started with to-do list. ^^It sounds simple enough. Let's see if it works!

By the way, you Randis and Dz-Zero crack me up! Dz, I used to watch that show a lot. :D What a good memory!
